POLL: Sneaking Into The Cookie Dough - Pleasure Or Pass?

I adore cookies! Whether fresh chocolate chip or flour cookies at Christmas time, they are one of the "foods" we routinely enjoy making. They offer an endless canvas for personality yet they are a common creation. One of happiness and comfort, not pretension.

One of those long-held pleasures is the act of sneaking a spoonful of raw dough before you even bake them.

I assume this is a common act for all cookie makers but, inevitably, I figure it's best to ask.

Perhaps some don't do it due to the raw eggs, or they simply prefer to wait and eat the "end product".

When I was little, sneaking into the raw dough was essentially the highlight of the cookie-making experience. It was a given that my sisters and I would be licking off one of the beaters or scooping out spoonfuls before the first batch got out of the oven.

I now have "matured" into somewhat more neutral ground and will sometimes intentionally avoid the raw dough in anticipation of tasting that first warm cookie. It's sort of trading one pleasure for the build up of another...

When I was a kid, I loved to sneak a bite of the chocolate-chip cookie dough, but I guess as an adult my snacking tastes shifted from sweet things to salty-crunchy things.

Raw egg wouldn't really be an issue. It didn't worry us back in the Jurassic when I was small, and in the era of battery chicken/egg farming, we buy local.

My trouble is that my tastes can shift from sweet to salty right in the same breath! So I simply satisfy both.

With at least a little moderation of course...

Necessary - Even if it's just "cleaning" the bowl or the beaters, especially chocolate chip dough! (I have, back in the university days, even eaten Slice N Bake right from the cold roll. Sorry, Mom.) It's not as good as the first warm cookie, as Jo Ann said, esp with a cold glass of milk but it is available while the cookies cook.

Of course I do, how am I to know if the end result will be good? I remember those Slice and Bake cookies, that dough was great!

I voted "Never", not because of raw eggs, but uncooked flour.

If it's chocolate chip cookies I actually prefer the dough to the cookies, as does my wife. She's so wonderful!
