Hot dog!

by Robin Garr » Mon Jul 04, 2011 10:47 am

Fourth of July, picnic day if the rains go away, and what could be more typical of the season than a good old hot dog?

Just for fun, let's do a poll, asking what kind of dog you prefer. I'll allow more than one answer just to mix things up a bit.

Hot dogs once in awhile are OK, I buy beef, sometimes turkey. Not a very healthy thing to eat, however, but they are very tasty!

The ones I buy contain both beef and pork - Sahlen's.

I very rarely eat hotdogs anymore, but if I do, it's beef.

Typically it's turkey/pork ones we cook the most on the grill. They seem to give a more tender and "pure" tasting profile that I kind of like.

And you always feel like you can eat a couple more of them than you can with the beef ones. Which is a good thing when it comes to hot dogs! :)

Once you pile on the mustard and diced onions, there's no going back...

If we were talking knockwurst, bratwurst or the like, pork or a combination of pork and beef are ideal. If, on the other hand speaking about "hot dogs" its beef all the way for me.

Hebrew National. We had another brand, but the local supers stopped carrying it for some reason, and we tried several until we finally settled on HN. Wife's very happy with them, and happy wife - happy life.

An update: the other day we got a hankerin' for hot dogs, and the local store had both pork and beef Boars Head natural casing franks, so thinking about this thread I bought both and we had a contest. Flavor? We both preferred the pork, it was nutmeggy and less salty than the beef, a lot like mortadella in fact. Texturewise, though, it was almost too soft both inside and out, where the beef had more texture and a whole lot more snap to the skin (which I love). Upshot? Neither was perfect and the exercise left me without a clear favorite.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

I did not know Boars Head made dogs. I buy their cold cuts when our grown children are coming with their families so everyone can make their own lunch. A locally owned grocery store near here sells Boars Head exclusively, including their cheese. Need to check this out.

The way the economy is going, we better all stock up on dogs.

I use the $1 per pound chicken hot dogs and make treats for my Vizla. I cut them into rounds, zap them in the nuke for 7 minutes. This gets most of the grease out, but leaves a lot of flavor (and salt) behind. She loves them and always wants them as her reward for going to bed each note. :-)

I think I will have to do a tasting because I truly do not know. Even though I do like a good hotdog. Grilled until well-charred. I will research further...though not the healthiest research subject. (No, I will not buy tofu dogs!)
Hello. My name is Carrie, and I...I....still like oaked Chardonnay. (Please don't judge.)
