Surplus appliances

by Robert Reynolds » Wed Jun 01, 2011 11:46 pm

No, not appliances yanked out of the latest mothballed military base, but the result of a dream getting diverted into an new direction.
Back in earliest 2009, Gail and I began planning a new home, and when we came across a too-good-to-pass-up deal on materials for that future house, we jumped on it. Fast forward to now, and with all the stress of health issues, trying for almost 18 months to sell the old house, and work pressures, we recently decided that building a house would entail more additional stress than we really wanted to experience, so we went house-hunting again. We looked at several, found one we really loved (on 20 acres, and very private), and now have it under contract. But... To install the 36" Electrolux Induction/standard electric cooktop (bought as a display closeout), and the GE Monogram double convection oven (got it at a steep discount due to a damaged trim piece) would mean completely redoing the kitchen in the place we're buying, but the kitchen is too nice to mess with.

So, we have the cooktop and oven for sale, and at a suggestion from one of our own, I'm posting here in case any of our resident foodies is interested before I try to pedal them on Craigslist or some such place. The oven is in never-installed condition; the cooktop was a display model; both came from a non-chain retailer here. If anybody is interested, send a pm, and we'll talk price and how to get it there from here. Might be a good excuse for a road trip.

It's sad to see the end of a dream, but lovely to read that your new place has a kitchen that's "too nice to mess with". And, any of us who have been through construction certainly understand the "emotional suffering" you're avoiding by going this route. It's like going straight to 'Go' in a game of Monopoly, isn't it. Congratulations. And thanks for making this offer to others. I'll pass this offer on to a neighborhood friend who has just started site prep for their new house also in our neighborhood--I don't know if they've bought appliances yet or not.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Sorry to see the dream end, but Gene and I know well the feelings. Sometimes the dreams take a long time to come to us and then the energy level and stress it all causes makes it not worth pursuing. When the cloud lifts however, the sun shines again and all becomes well with the next plan. Good luck with your new plans and I, too, will keep my ears open for any takes on the appliances. I bet they would go fast on Craig's list.

We had a similar expereince. We were going to build right down the road when we are now, but the deal fell through due to a change in management at the builder. We had ALL our appliances on order and paid for. When we found this place ready to move into, we gave all the appliances in it to our kids, and kept the new ones! Thank goodness.
