We no longer should eat mulita

by GeoCWeyer » Thu Apr 28, 2011 12:43 pm

According to the LA Times we no longer should have anything to do with "mulita"/armadillos. Armadillos has been shown to pass along Hansen's disease to humans. Hansen's is another name for leprosy. Mulita is an historic Rio Platense delicacy. It is said than when someone is determining how many to prepare for guests one first asks the guests if they have ever eaten mulita. If the response is yes than the next question is "how many times?". Taking that response the host knows how many to prepare.

If you have never eaten mulita then one will serve 4 people. If you have eaten mulita twice then the host figures on one mulita for ever two people. If the response is more than twice then each guest receives an entire mulita.

I found mulita to taste very similiar to young suckling pig. The meat was light, very juicy and very good!

Haven't read the article, George. How did they trace it--is there are a lot of lepers in Texas, or something?

Well, Dallas Cowboy fans are treated as such by most of the fans of other NFL teams.

On a hunting/camping trip on my Uncle's farm in the Deep South, I shot a 'dillo in the pasture with my .44 mag revolver (farmers hate the them because livestock can break a leg in holes dug by the armadillos, and as an invasive species, they are considered vermin in most of the US). When I took a look at the glistening white exposed flesh, I saw absolutely nothing that looked edible.

If I have it right, they did figure this out based on leprosy cases in the southeastern U.S. What's interesting is that they are pretty sure that there was no leprosy in the New World prior to Columbus getting here, so the leprosy carried by the armadillos originally came from humans who brought it from Europe.

The recent determination is that the strain of Hansen's bacillus, the bacterium that causes leprosy, in humans is the same one found in armadillos. It's long been suspected that the sporadic cases of Hansen's disease in the US southwest were contracted from armadillos. This is further evidence that the disease can be transmitted this way.

Completely cooked mulita is probably safe, but the cook preparing the dish might be at risk here.

If they are as good as in the picture, you check the roadkill to see how warm the belly is, unless they are belly up; then you check something else like the armpit. If warm enough, take 'em home, and eat 'em.

So, I am guessing that leprosy makes their armpits colder??

I don't think killing an armadillo with a pickup makes it kosher, so I'll have to pass.
