EVOO question

by Jim Grow » Tue Apr 26, 2011 6:56 pm

Could someone recommend a high quality EVOO available in the U.S.? I'd like to buy one that might double as a cooking oil and a dipping oil with more flavor than what I usually find available in Ohio.

Absolutely. If you have a Costco, buy their Tuscan EVOO. $13 or $16 for a liter sized bottle, I forget which and it's delicious. It's my everyday cooking oil and good enough for dipping and salads too.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

In addition to the one Jenise recommended, I would highly recommend the widely available Partanna EVOO from Sicily at about the same price. We just paid $11.99 for a liter.

Rare Wine Company sells nice oils, as does O & Co.

<soapbox>But, really, I don't like peppery olive oils so most of the excitement about Tuscany just leaves me cold. Also, leccino is pretty dull as olives go.</soapbox>

We buy most of our olive oil at Costco. But we don't buy the house brand.

For years we have bought the Berio EVOO in big jugs. It answers most of our needs, and we think it tastes good.

I do like the green expensive Tuscan stuff once in a while so I generally have a $40 bottle of oil on hand to top things with, not so much to cook with. If it says "Laudemio" on the bottle then it's good for that sort of thing.

If you have a Trader Joe's where you live, the Greek Kalamata oil in the 750 ml bottle is my favorite and is a good deal at about $8. Lately I've been using a Portuguese oil called Marialva that is very nice for the $6/750 ml price - but you probably won't find it unless you have a Portuguese neighborhood around.

Agreed, and I would add Colavita as another good buy, good quality in affordable liter jugs.

We'll generally use Colavita or Berio for most cooking and keep some kind of fancy Tuscan around for salads and recipes where it's added as a last minute flavoring.
