Manquats

by Jenise » Wed Apr 20, 2011 11:05 am

Saw these this week at the Food Co-op. Golf-ball large oblongs with pointy ends, apparently a marriage of kumquats for their sweet thin skin and mandarins for their sweet, juicy insides. Better than any kumquat I've ever had, really wonderful.

It is, but Kum-darines would have been worse!

Kumdarines or Manquats? Bleh. Let's name them after something else.

OK, I'll post my image of what a MANQUAT looks like. You can take care of the KUM DARINE.

Thanks for the pic - it jump-started my diet.

Not going there! But speaking of these fruits, I had the last ones for lunch today. Oh my were they good. They were ridiculously expensive (rare AND organic), but it was honestly worth it to know that there's fruit like this on the planet.

I googled Manquat and nothing but Kumquat came up. What size tree, shrub do these grown on. Do you have a link to any info? I just found more info...mandarinquat is the term most used from what I saw.

If I could grow citrus here, I'd be hunting for a tree right now!

Growing citrus in the pacific northwest might be possible in moveable pots. Have you talked with the nursery to see what can be grown? We grow citrus in Redding and it is tricky but can be done. There are actually pockets of climate differences where ever you live and you might be in one of them. We have to cover our citrus with frost cloth during hard freezes and in the case of our lemon tree, we keep a light on it all winter during colder days Just across the next street from us, a man raises citrus in his backyard with no problem.

I understand a guy in Lynden (town 15 miles away) does it, and it involves moving the trees indoors (to sun room he built onto a barn I think) in the winter. I just don't have any place like that. And besides, my five cats completely MISunderstand the purpose of dirt IN the house.

I'm with you on that, Jenise. We have a 7 foot palm in the living room which we have to keep the French doors closed preventing entry of our large male "Max". Once in a while, when I'm careless, he gets in and there's dirt everywhere.
