Even though it is sleeting today, the watercress is up and we harvested a huge batch today. This is the surest sign of spring in our neck of the woods. The asparagus can't be far behind.
I am enjoying this years crop simply dressed with lemon juice and a few drops of a very good Spanish olive oil and a little finely minced garlic chive. Love it when you don't need to fuss to make it spectacular. When I start to get tired of it will try a watercress cappucino floated with caviar. I am sorry I disparaged my environs previously. We really do have some spectacular edibles.
i'm confused. watercress is so called because it grows in water. even around here it never dies off and can be picked in running water all winter. so how does it 'come up'. maybe you are talking about garden cress or even mustard.
David, Yes, in running water but only above water in early spring here. At heights above the water line there are no root hairs and it is quite easy to harvest and clean. I've never broken the ice layer over the stream to check for growth but I doubt it. Definitely not mustard but with a definite bite of pepper.
