What is/are your food weakness(es)?

by Bruce Hayes » Fri Apr 15, 2011 2:18 pm

As I stood in front of the vending machine at work, asking myself, "Do I really need that bag of Doritos" I got to thinking about food weaknesses, those things we all love to eat and which, in most cases, aren't the best for us.

In addition to Doritos, mine would be cookies (usually members of the chocolate family, but I am flexible on this point), chocolate and cheese (any kind, any color).

So, what are some of yours?

PS: My willpower kicked in and I walked away from the vending machine empty handed.

Ahh yes...Doritos are a classic! And if you are addicted to them, there's no way to hide it...(crunch, crunch) ;)

I also agree with cookies! Especially holiday (flour) cookies around Christmas. Or my most indulgent favorite - homemade chocolate chip! Warm out of the oven... ahhh...

Burgers for me!

Chocolate can be a natural one of course.

Iced coffees.

Coca Cola in the traditional 8 oz. glass bottles (just in leisurely amounts).

There are also certain foods that I don't eat all the time, but when I crave them, nothing else seems to do the trick. These would include:

Pizza
Hot Dogs on the grill (cookout food)
(Real) Hot Fudge Sundaes
Fried Chicken (Mashed Potatoes/Side Dishes)

Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

Pizza, cookies, ice cream, good bread, "kettle" style potato chips, french fries, and a wide variety of sandwiches would all fit in as weaknesses for me. Some of these get indulged frequently (I have a sandwich and a small bag of chips for lunch on most weekdays), others (ice cream, cookies, pizza) not so often.

Hot dogs, knockwurst and bratwurst and that wherever in the world I happen to find myself. Can't resist them at six in the morning, while strolling, in between meals, for meals....whatever and whenever. The same for pizza that smells/looks good.

It used to be ice cream BIG TIME but over the years I eat far less.

Doritos and pizza are still high on the list.

Right off the top, pizza for sure, but it has to be good pizza. Mary's homemade chocolate-chip cookies. And frozen blueberries, right out of the bag.

Stuffed cabbage rolls, made with hamburger, rice, layered with tomato sauce and lots of sauerkraut. I only make once a year, and make a big pot full, because I eat them for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Most other things I can resist, except for M & M peanuts. So I just don't buy them. We are given a bag for Easter by a son....I have to put them away in a drawer so they are out of sight. Gene nibbles on them...but that is OK. He weighs less now than he did in high school. Brat!

You don’t have to bother mentioning “are,” Bruce; almost everybody these days just uses “is” for both singular and plural subjects. Even Pat Sajak now occasionally says, “Yes, there’s three R’s.” Nobody wants to fuss. It’s easier to go with “is” for everything, you save time.

Traditional French food, such as foie gras and other Pâtés, organ meats, cream sauces and real butter on crunchy white bread. But this can only be done properly in the biggest of cities, so I don’t indulge all that often. Maybe twice a year I will sneak into a Micky D’s and have either a Big Mack and Freedom Fries or a fish sandwich and same. Maybe once a year, when my wife is on the road and I am home alone, I will purposely drink too much and after a steak or lobster drive (a mile on 30 mph street) to Stewarts and order a vanilla ice cream cone to savour in the parked car. And when in The City, I will very occasionally pop in a Nathan’s or Sabrett hot dog from a cart with just mustard. It’s got to have the skin that pops when you bite it. If my wife ever knew about the fast food or ice cream she would cut my hardened heart out. At home we do a great job of eating the right food, such as including three different liberal portions of vegetables with each dinner, never having a processed food or white flour bread, and using the kind of fake butter that is good for you.

Really not into sweets at all. Never crave candy, cookies, chocolate. Now breads, especially good wheat; pastas, especially home made fresh semolina or buckwheat; rice dishes.....these kind of carbs are my downfall. I'm known for cooking up a cup of barley and polishing it off in short order.

For a couple of years there I couldn't stop eating honey with my fruit desserts during the winter. The toughest is March and April when the glorious citrus is over but the summer berries haven't begun and there are only mangy apples available. But this year for some reason I didn't do the honey thing. Actually, the reason is that I was indulging one of my other 'weaknesses' : dried fruits. Especially dried mangoes and dates, but also figs, prunes, apricots, whatever...

Forgot a few passions in my earlier post:

Croissants
Brioches
Beignets
Chocolate Eclairs
Profiteroles
Raspberry mousse
Croques Monsieurs et Madames
Frites (French fries) either with salt, mayonnaise, aioli or NY Deli mustard
Raw oysters
Oysters Rockefeller
Hot pastrami or corned beef sandwiches
Cold pastrami or corned beef sandwiches
Italian hero sandwiches with ham, cheese and an abundance of mustard

Ye gods!!! Why don't I weigh 300 pounds? One of the great mysteries of life....

I'm talking from an unusual perspective, Bill. I live in a town that has some extremely fine local pizzerias, and that is also the world headquarters for both Pizza Hut and Papa John's. Yes, Bill, there is bad pizza. :P
