Back to the grind: Peugeot Pepper Mill Episode 3

by Jenise » Tue Mar 22, 2011 1:35 am

When I last left you, my new Peugeot pepper mill had been returned to the store I bought it from after it refused to grind the tellichery extra bold (which is extra large). They told me I should use malabar for best results (less skin) as per the manufacturer, and I told them that was absolutely absurd. But I was willing to try again with the smaller tellicherry regular as soon as my next order arrived.

And I did. No change. So today I took it back again. There were two clerks in the store, and they both tried it out. "It's skipping!", said one, and then the other tried it and agreed, "yup, it skips." "Skipping" is apparently official pepper mill lingo, and though I'd never heard it before I started throwing it around like I'd been using it all my life, "Yes it skips! And it was skipping when I brought it back three months ago." It turns out they're actually familiar with this issue and have had to replace others. Not many, but I'm not the first and the manufacturer will gladly give me a new one.

Don't know why that didn't come up until today, grrrr, but oh well and I *do* look forward to being happy with another.

Is 'happiness' all the better for its having been so long denied?

Uh, no she said without hesitation. :) I don't have a replacement yet--the shop I bought this at is out of my model of preference so it remains to be proven that pepper mill happiness is possible or, indeed, mine.

Sounds like you need someone who's not a Skipper:

Here's the one I like. I have a black one and a white one. They can go from very coarse (almost cracked) down to finer than I like.

But they're kitchenware, not tableware.
I have a Peugeot also - it's a bit fussy but works Ok, though it won't go as coarse as I sometimes want.

Is this a picture of it, John?

I could use that! I've been using the Penzey's Zazzenhaus (?) for years, but it looks like they don't offer that brand any more. I give them two thumbs up for durability, but they sure do race through peppercorns. We used up a couple of Peugeots before that and weren't at all happy with their durability. I like the looks of the PepperMate.

Yep, that's the little lads! They hold a goodly amount of pepper and you can either grind into the little clear cover on the bottom or pop the cover off and grind traditionally.

Until then I suppose you could pluck the cracked peppercorns out of mortadella slices.
