Captain Crunch is gone

by Karen/NoCA » Wed Mar 09, 2011 8:12 pm

While never a fan of high sugared cereals, and did not give them to our children when they were growing up, this one had a long enjoyed popularity among many people. What I don't like is the amount of times I see that the government has once again stepped to to take control of what we eat, do, or buy. It seems that a huge portion of the population does not know how to take care of themselves.

Perhaps I missed it, but the link suggests that it was a "business decision" put the Capt. out to pasture and not a Gubmint mandate.

I'm not that much of a cereal eater, but am really sad about this. Peanut Butter Cap't Crunch is my favorite. It actually has only 9 grams of sugar which is comparable to many of the "healthy" cereals my husband asks me to buy. Darn, darn. I will miss it.
Hello. My name is Carrie, and I...I....still like oaked Chardonnay. (Please don't judge.)

actually the cereal isn't gone, but "active marketing " (primarily ads on kids TV shows) is ceasing. For now, this will become one of the orphan brands (like Fresca - you can get it, but not marketed).

Anyone remember this from their early active marketing?

"I sing a song of Captain Crunch
The sugar sweet cereal that's fun to munch
It's great for breakfast or even lunch
No amount of milk will make it lose it's crunch
So all ashore that's going ashore
Get Captain Crunch at your grocery store!"
"People who love to eat are always the best people"

I'm still trying to get over the widespread halt of the General Mills "monster cereals" (Count Chocula, Franken Berry & Boo Berry). ;)

The good news is that the three of them DO still exist. But they seem to be very limited in distribution and often times seasonal (around Halloween you may find them at select grocery stores). They also have apparently "tinkered" a bit with the formula. Whenever I've been able to recently locate and taste a box, it's good but not quite what I remember from youth. Count Chocula is the one that still seems to taste fairly good (rich). And also the one that appears to be most popular and common to find.

Honestly, as the parent of a six year old, I'd be just as happy if all those sugar-laden cereals disappeared from the store shelves. We've been fortunate so far that he hasn't been yowling for such things, but I figure that we're just one sleepover away from a long discussion about why we don't have Lucky Charms or Froot Loops in our pantry.

In a perfect metaphor for the gourmet revolution, the inventor of Captain Crunch, Chaim Gur-Arieh, now spends his days making very good Syrah and Zinfandel in the Sierra Foothills (C.G. Di Arie vineyards).

Bonus fun fact: the inventor of the Kit-Kat bar, Michel Bourqui, just wrapped up several years serving as the director of pedagogy at the Organization Internationale de la Vigne. When I told my daughter about meeting him, she was impressed that I had finally met someone really important, instead of those boring old wine people.
