Stevia: tried it? Like it?

by Jenise » Wed Jan 05, 2011 4:07 pm

I don't sweeten drinks or much of anything else, so my need to get interested in low- or no-calorie sugar substitutes couldn't be lower. For the pinch or two I need here or there, a bit of demerrara or honey is just fine. All the same, I'm curious about Stevia. One comment I read over the weekend alluded to not all brands tasting alike, that some find some brands having a "bitter" flavor or aftertaste but it did not mention any brands by name. What has your experience been, if any?

I have 2 types in my house now, both bought by my son. He wanted me to try them, as they are a natural product. One is a dark brown liquid and it is bitter. The other is a fine white powder, but it is so concentrated that it is difficult to measure properly. It is very sweet, but with a slight bitterness. I prefer Splenda.

I keep small packets of Stevia that I buy at the health food store in my purse. We go to breakfast now and then with friends and I always enjoy a cup of coffee while chatting. I use 1/2 of the package per cup of coffee. Tastes OK to me.
A place of business that I go to in town has a small tea bar for the clients. They have a large Costco type plastic jar of Stevia that has a shaker side and a spooning side. I hate the shaker side because it gets all over. The stuff is so light, it just flies away.

We've used granular Stevia from time to time with good results. It is the only non sugar sweetener we've used that stands up to cooking. Right now we just keep some packets around for those who ask for it. We use sugar in things now because we know we won't live forever.

The other is a fine white powder

And brought over by your son?

Do you get the least bit euphoric or excitable or even agitated when you use this fine white powder, Howie?
