CanAm Top Cheese--competition tonight!

by Jenise » Fri Dec 24, 2010 2:44 pm

Bill Spohn gifted me with some of the famous (or so he claims) Canadian cheese snack, Hawkins' Cheezies. They look similar to the famous American cheese snack, Cheetos: apparently a dough is extruded, fried and then coated in cheese flavored seasoning. Well, tonight I'm taking both to Christmas Eve dinner where the ten in attendance will be asked to sample and vote on their favorite. Stay tuned for the results tomorrow!

Cheetos won 11-2. Sorry, Canada.

So, what's next? Wheetabix vs Shredded Wheat? I have to admit, I've never had a good hot dog in Canada.

My goodness - they preferred orange styrofoam?? Maybe the early training in that sticks to you? Ah well, my congratulations to the two with taste, anyway!

We actually gave these some serious attention, Bill, as much as can happen at a Christmas Eve dinner where the champagne was flowing quite freely (good salty snack pairing), and FWIW I agreed with the majority. For texture, the denser crunch of the Cheezies won out over the Cheetos for sure. There were more large pieces, too, which we all found more pleasing. No contest there, but where the Cheezies missed the boat was on taste. In winetasting vernacular, the taste progression of the Cheezies went: grease, salt, cheese, and the finish reverted to salt. Even the people who voted for the Cheezies agreed with that summation--they just preferred that greasy taste! With the Cheetos, the flavor went cheese then salt, but the finish was back to cheese. They were, in a word, cheezier. And that's why they won.
