The other stuff is interesting too, but the names for the hot sauces are...saucy!

Fun names. The hot sauce department of any store interested in that sector of the food market is usually a very fun place to browse. I don't know who the first funny namer was, but the first I recall knowing about were the likes of Dave's Insanity, Inner Beauty and A Woman Scorned. I get the impression that spicy-hot food per se isn't particularly popular in Canada (though of course there would be some fans), is that true?

I think it depends on where you grew up and what your experience is. I've got American friends brought up in white bread Northeastern areas that crave the stuff, and I lost my sauce virginity in Hawaii when I was spending a lot of time there. Some of the Fillipino guys sure like it hot! I'm an adobo fan, but the really hot ones put me off because they prevent appreciation of wine with them. Maybe if you ate that sort of stuff day in, day out you'd be able to get past the burn, but I still wonder if you could really appreciate wines with it. Seems to me that beer would be the drink of choice with that sort of thing.

You guys in the US got Spanish/Mexican influence in your population and of course the cuisine came with it.

We got French influence (and before you say we got the best deal, let me mention poutine.....) so we don't have a tradition of spicy foods, although many people in the great melting pot come from cultures that do, so we get just about everything in terms of food availability and presence in restaurants.
