Drink suggestions needed

by Christina Georgina » Mon Dec 20, 2010 9:13 am

I'm having an Italian dessert buffet open house and am looking for suggestions for easy liquid refreshment. NOT serving coffee/tea/eggnog. The typical suspects: pizzelle, biscotti, fruit crostata, pan forte, amaretti, cannoli, struffoli...lots of almond/honey/anise/fig flavors. Do have some Vin Santo but wavering about the rest. ? Asti ? a dessert Moscato ? Thanks

Asti ?

Sure.

a dessert Moscato ?

Sure.

Not sure what is available in your area, but a range of Italian dessert wines would probably be a nice touch given your range of Italian desserts. Not sure if Amarone and the like would work, but I'm sure folks would still drink it! Sounds deliciously fun.

With an Italian dessert buffet, I would think an espresso bar would be a must have! Then an assortment of dessert wines. Muscat is always a good choice. Personally, I think Limoncello comes on a little strong.

Purists might shudder, but how about Limoncello and soda in a tall glass with a lemon twist and lots of ice? It would turn the 'cello into a nice low-alcohol drink that ought to go nicely with this Italian dessert buffet. If you want to go fancy, consider rimming the glasses with powdered sugar.

With the desserts, espresso of French press coffee and, at the same time, grappa.

A coffee option would be perfect but there will be too many people [ probably around 25 ]and the logistics of making and serving that # outstrip my Chemex.
Also did not want to fool around with having a de caf option. Will definitely do it for the die hard late stayers.
Great ideas. Thanks

Sgroppino! This recipe seems to be the most classic Venetian of the ones I've seen on the web, and is quite close to how we make ours.

You could even make a large batch in an ice-cold punch bowl, one person whisking and one person pouring. Would make a great centerpiece.

Brachetto d'Acqui wine -- it's Italian, red, fizzy, and sweet.

If not, then I'd throw my lot in with the limoncello crowd.

Christina,

With desserts we usually do Frangelico, Sambuca (heck, if you're not having coffee, you can put the 3 coffee beans in a glass...LOL!), Sweet Marsala, and something yellow...I don't think it's Limoncello, but can't think of the name right now. I actually think it has a anise flavor.

I think an Asti might be great too.

Your Desserts sound delicious...hope you have a wonderful Christmas!

I believe that would be Galliano.
Cheers!

Maculan makes some pretty nice dessert wines.

With the drier biscuits and nutty desserts, Amarone Recioto would be a delight.
