The dishwasher is dead! Long live the dishwasher!

Jenise is fine, everybody, sheesh. I mean my personal dishwashing machine. :)

Our 1984 house came with a dishwasher that recently broke (and had been recalled for a semi-serious electrical fault, so please check if your front panel looks like this:)
Image
It's something else coming into the modern era. Our old one had coarsely spaced racks, an exposed heating element, and was loud enough we had to leave the room to have a conversation. You can see the interior here:

I'm so far very happy with our new Bosch. $400 out the door for much higher capacity, two levels of sprayer, and presumably it is much more water efficient. I have never been so excited to fill up a load of dirty dishes. They came out perfectly. I wish the silverware basket were positioned toward the front, but otherwise it's a dream. I can't see laying out the big bucks for a high-end model when this one does such a good job. Now if it will just last 26 years, I'll be happy.

Congratulations on the new machine. Bosch makes great DWs.

Where is the silverware basket if not toward the front? (Most are.) My Bosch has a basket that will fit over any of the little posts so I can put it anywhere I want to. Also, it's made of two halves clipped together, therefore I can undo them and position them side by side or just use one half to make more space for dishes. For all that flexibility, though, I very very rarely do any of that. I just get used to filling it a certain way and do the same thing over and over. :|

I don't know Bosch but it is not "the modern way" to build appliances to last forever.

According to our appliance repair guy, the newer energy efficient dishwashers are trouble. The motors have one or two amp motors that just can't handle to load over a period of time. We elected to replace a fried control panel in our 5-6 year old machine. Only time will tell if we made a wise decision or not.

We're familiar with such semi-serious electrical faults. We have an ancient dishwasher-on-wheels that connects to the faucet. We quit using it after I brushed against the side of it with my bare leg and received a mild but very noticeable electric shock. It's now become counter and storage space.

Will a DW be part of your remodel, Mike?

Absolutely. My wife bought one during some incredible sale a couple of years ago (I think it's a Miele). It's been living ever since in our contractor's barn.

Speaking of the remodel, we spent a couple of hours last night with an architect we've been working with. We've worked out a basic plan and he's now moving on to drawing up elevations, determining how the cabinetry will be placed, etc. I think Mardi's comfortable with the basic layout (which includes changes to kitchen, pantry, and family room), so things may finally get moving. (Knock on wood....)

Oh how exciting, Mike. Glad to hear it's going to come together before your appliances become obsolete (making fun of myself here, because that's what happened to me).

I hope your Bosch serves you well Walt, ours has not been nice. As a matter of fact I hate the thing. It cleans ok but doesn't dry worth a hoot. We've had it 4 years now and I don't think its gonna see 5  .

Make it a threesome for having the warranty run out before installation !!!!
I love my Miele DW, warming drawer and oven with double rotisserie.

Hey, speaking of dishwashers but appropos of not much else, friends of ours bought the separate-drawer style Fisher and Paykel dishwasher(s) (and these people DO cook, the DW's don't just sit there though style/aesthetics was the thing uppermost in their mind when they made this choice). And guess what? THE DRAWERS AREN'T TALL ENOUGH FOR THEIR EXTRA LARGE DIAMETER HANDMADE NEW MEXICO POTTERY DINNER PLATES, so those have to be washed by hand. That means that some tall pans, decanters, furnace filters and what-all of the type I routinely run through mine wouldn't fit either. Beware anyone who would ever consider making a similar choice!

That would be a potential problem with those dish drawers. I thought they looked pretty cool but you do lose a lot of headroom with them.

I live with a doll-house dishwasher: 18" across. The smallest model made, I believe. (We do have a small kitchen so this is appropriate.)

This is an important point, Jenise. When our dishwasher died an untimely death this year (our notoriously hard water being the perp) I purchased as a replacement a Whirlpool with a tall tub. It's amazing to me what I can now fit in the dishwasher, including some Riedel glasses in the top and various roasting and broiling pans in the bottom. Now, if I could only do something about that hard water...

Had a Miele in the house I moved from and it was great. There is an old Bosch in our new house that is not getting the dishes very clean. Will shortly replace with another Miele. Once you go Miele I don't think you go back.

Though I've no complaints about my Bosch, I've been told this by others. Especially for glassware--I have a friend who even puts her Baccarats in hers.

I am on my third Bosch, because of moving not replacing. The drying system in Bosch is meant to prevent the melting problem of many American dishwashers, as such plastic and melmac type things will generally not come out dry, but if glassware and regular china and stoneware are not drying, you should definitely seek repair.
