A special one-hour edition of the PBS show NOW details host David Brancaccio's journey across America searching for sustainability. One of his destinations is Bellingham, Washington, which is more or less where I live. And one of the places he visits is The Willows Inn on Lummi Island, which is a 20 minute drive and 10 minute ferry ride away from home for us. I dine there at least once a year and last went with Susan B, who posts here, and our husbands on the occasion of their hosting a winemaker dinner featuring the wines of Washington's DeLille Winery which Susan and I are both fans of. The evening began before sunset with grilled oysters and boiled Dungeness crab, both just hours out of the water, on the beach opposite the Inn. Pretty grand. Everything we ate that night was grown or caught there on Lummi. Notably, the Inn has just acquired a new chef, a real rock star of the culinary world as he sous-cheffed at Copenhagen's famed Noma, considered by many the best restaurant in the world as of the moment. Haven't eaten Blaine's food yet but any day now, that's going to change.
Not that anyone cares where I live, but just thought I'd mention that to anyone inclined to watch this. Bellingham or not, it should be an interesting program.
Anyway, if any of you are PBS viewers, thought I'd mention the program. Here's a teaser from David's travel blog about his visit:
