Uh oh, Rocco's got another show

by Jenise » Fri Nov 05, 2010 11:22 am

Currently in development at Bravo but not yet on the air, they're calling it Rocco's Dinner Party. Apparently it's going to be a dinner party version of Chopped, wherein four chefs create and serve a multi course meal for Rocco and his "guests" and one chef is elminated after each round.

I'm growing a little tired of this genre. is anyone else? Seems there is really a lack of creativity on the food shows these days.

Yes, which is why I made the comparison I did. It's Chopped' without the gummy bears. Not that bald-faced ripoffs have hurt the reality show world...I don't think they've made a The Real Housewives of Renton yet, but any day now....

Isn't there a limit on how many "reality" cooking shows can be produced without repetition of a similiar show already known to the public? When you leave out fiction with something like cooking aren't you limited in story matter? I'm just asking?????????

That doesn't hold back tv. Most sitcoms are the same basic show, but they continue to provide entertainment.

But Seinfeld wasn't limited to non fiction, the writers had a much greater latitude in their approach to any subject. Even if an episode was about nothing.

Seinfeld is an exception. I'm not claiming that most tv shows are good. (Although some clearly are). I'm just pointing out that the networks keep putting up lots of the same basic formula and someone keeps watching it. Creativity need not apply!

It's obvious to me that the next step in chef competition shows should "kick it up a notch".

Make a Chef Pinks show!

For those of you unaware of what the hell I'm talking about, there has been a show on cable called "Pinks" wherein auto drag enthusiasts literally put it all on the line by agreeing to a race, with the winner getting the loser's 'pink slip'---title of ownership.

You gotta believe in your car if you're willing to put it on the line in a race!

#1 Result: We'd have damned fewer entries into the contests, thus winnowing out all the wusses and thinning the field.

#2 Result: The contestants would put everything they've got (literally) into the competition.

#3 Result: The ratings would skyrocket.

(And then the next step would inevitably be "Celebrity Chef Death Match---Winner Take All".
