Five Guys' Second Chance

by Jenise » Mon Sep 06, 2010 8:43 pm

Stopped in at the burger joint today as Bob and I were out and hungry while doing errands. As before, we split a burger and fries. Burger: just okay. Had it made with just lettuce, tomato and raw onion, and I have to tell you the big clumsy dice (page Jeff B!) is a turnoff. So is the chopped lettuce, which just doesn't have the flavor that biting into torn crisp leaves would have. I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't come from the factory already chopped, in big bags. The bun? Steamed and mashed into more or less nothing by the time you unwrap the foil it comes in. Conclusion? The meat tastes good but the rest of it's so pedestrian it takes the meat down with it. The fries were very different and much better than last time, correctly colored and crisp. But still, after sharing just half of each, I felt like I'd poisoned myself with bad calories. Bob did too and further commented on the cost, pointing out that "A guy who comes in here alone really gets f---ked. The basic burger, fries and smallest drink runs almost $11." He's got a point.

But my criticism isn't going to hurt them one little bit. Even well past the usual lunch hour at 1:30, the place was packed.

Yikes. Makes me miss In n Out that much more (I think a double-double and well done fries still rang in under $4 or 5).

I haven't had Five Guys, but heard lots of good and bad things. They've got a couple of joints in Connecticut, so I'll try them out at some point or the other - but after reading some of these posts I don't expect to be floored.

For a place that does burgers only "well", it's fine. But I'm with hubby... too pricey for what it is.

I don't think you will. Simple as the menu is, In n' Out is rather refined by comparison.

And yet the place is full of families. Except for the fact that they can share a large fries, that's going to run some serious dough. Even the "little" hamburger runs $4.50.

Seriously, with all of the excellent cooks on this site, we all know we can make better, healthier, burgers at home. Even fries, are better at home, right off of the heat and into our mouths. :P Like most people, Gene and I occasionally go for a fast food burger (always my suggestion, never his) and every time I swear I am never going to do that again. For some reason, it settles like a rock in my gut. A year goes by and we do it again!

For the fries, I cut thick wedges of potato, toss with a little olive oil and coarse salt, and roast in the oven at a high heat. They are always crisp on the outside and buttery inside. Three of those babies is about all I want. With the fast food fries, I usually end up eating the entire sack.

Karen, yours sound very good, but we would rather do without the mess of cleaning up; we just don't go for the oven fries except with sweet potatoes. We have a place just 25 minutes from here over in Maine called Ted's Fried Clams. They have been around since 1950 and have the best fries ever. You can have them with excellent burgers, lobster rolls, or any kind of fried seafood you can imagine; or just pick up a bag. They get $3.99 for a pint, and $5.99 for a quart!

I just have to get back to that part of the country and try all these places I read about. Oh yum!

Burgers at home are wonderful but if you are out and about in Bellingham, where can you go? The usual fast food places don't appeal. Boomer's doesn't impress me. Fiamma Burger was greasy, the patty was on the small side, and all was more expensive than Five Guys plus they charge extra for the add-ons (which include fire roasted Hatch green chiles). Fries start at $1.75 maxing at $3.50. There's a Kobe burger at Hearthfire for over $10, but that's not fast food. Someone mentioned Chubby's Diner for good burgers, so maybe that's worth a look (just looked at their menu, burgers start at $6.99 - yikes! - but includes one side order).

I'm glad you had a better fry experience at Five Guys. For me, a small burger, shared fries, and a Cherry Coke hits the spot, but I miss Burger Me.

Agree with your assessments of the above suspects and haven't been to Chubby's either, but would give Fiamma a break for high quality, all organic ingredients. I like Sonic Burger's burger better than Five Guys--both are wrapped in foil and get that steamed thing going on. But they're all dumb compared to Burger Me which really did compare well to In n Out on the burger end and the fries there were to die for. Oh, and if you're ever tempted to try Lee's Drive-in across from Trader Joe's? Don't. They have a drive up window but you'll sit there for ten minutes while they make your order--and it's not worth the wait. One place we need to try is Wynn's, over on 11th or 12th in Fairhaven by the Haggens Market. It gets talked up a lot, though I've not tried them.

Yes! Definitely want to try Winn's - I couldn't think of the name when I was writing my original response. Maybe I'll run down there for lunch today - it's not far for me.

I would definitely give Fiamma another try but don't think I could get Scot there. He's not a fan of the communal table, plus there was an ridge in our table which resulted in a sticky soda pop spill.

We tried Sonic 2x but weren't impressed - and do they even have fries? Don't they have tater tots? If so, we are not tot people, in more ways than one.

It's nice to have one local burger joint, preferably not a huge chain, that we can use not only for our burger "fixes", but also as a recco for people coming to town.

Report in from Winns, if you go. Fiamma--their onion rings are to die for. Housemade, and with interesting herbs in the batter. But I've only been once--if I'm on that street and I'm hungry, then I'm going to the Bagelry for a havarti and sprouts on pumpernickel bagel sandwich.

Sonic--it's not impressive but I've been twice and like the burger better, and it's probably half the price of Five Guys. And you're right about the tots--I think they offer something else as an alternative but I don't indulge so I'm not sure what that is.

But what it all comes down to is that with Burger Me closed, we take care of our burger fixes at home. Healthier, tastier. Nothing available in this town can compare. If out and in need of a quick meal, we'd be better off with a couple Jack in the Box tacos.
