Pineapple Guava

by Karen/NoCA » Fri Sep 03, 2010 1:48 pm

I inquired to my nursery a few weeks ago about pineapple guavas. I got an email this morning that they have 5 gallon containers back in their stock. I think someone on here had one, so I'd like to inquire about the fruit and what do you do with it?

You cut them in half and eat them right out of the shell, scooping out the contents with a grapefruit spoon. I know jellies and jams are made of them, but I've never had those myself and can't imagine cooking this fruit that is so spectacularly delicious raw.

Do I remember correctly that someone in your neighborhood has one of these shrubs?

Not now, but when I was a child they had a large mature tree of them, and I planted one in my yard in Huntington Beach years ago.

Never having heard of a "pineapple guava", I wondered just what I was missing. Seems I have not missed it at all but know the fruit by its more formal name as Feijoa. One of the most often mis-pronounced of words, as I understand it the proper pronunciation is fey-jo-ha.

As to why the name "pineapple guava", I remain confused for to me it tastes like neither pineapple nor guava. It surely does, however, taste like feijoa.

Pineapple Guava is the common name, Feijoa sellowiana is the botanical name. Is the "j" silent? There are other varieties, but the one I mentioned is the one grown here where we live.
