Hell Hath No Fury Like A Critic Scorned

by Jenise » Thu Sep 02, 2010 2:52 pm

Mario Batali stood up Gael Greene this morning and she blogged about it.

http://insatiable-critic.com/Article.aspx?id=1410

But on the sub of Ms. Greene herself, an excerpt in a recent issue of Saveur really grabbed my attention: it addressed her long affair with a male porn star. Who she met I forget where, but their relationship grew out of a flirtation that occurred upon the occasion of them being in the same place at the same time and her actually recognizing him from one of his movies. She admits to all this with some pride.

And I don't know if it's the book or not or if it's true or not, but I did read somewhere that she also slept with Elvis. Which makes her a fairly interesting person in my book, me being about as square as you can be and still be a Democrat.

I'm not that familiar with her though. Her name has been around forever in the food world, but since she's a New York critic her work flies under that radar of those of us who live outside that realm. In fact, it wasn't until Top Chef Masters that I had a clue about what she looked or sounded like.

Has anyone read her memoir, Insatiable? Anyone know her? Daniel, have you slept with her too?

Could be a case of simply forgetting, unless he has handlers and then just decided not to show up. Perhapes he feels inferior to her. She looks rather elegant, something Mario is not!

You young whippersnapper.

Was a time when Gael Greene was the absolute epitome of cutting edge---and cutting, edgy---critics.

Now she's just old and odd.

Like me (see, I said it before all you other guys could get it in.)

Seriously, in her heyday, she wrote some awfully good stuff, and championed a lot of good stuff that might not otherwise have been noticed. I think she suffered from that ego thing (well, d'oh) that writers/critics often get, where they thing it has become all about them instead of what they're writing about...but that's another issue. :D

What you'd gather from Top Chef Masters. And those hats. There's actually something slightly Dame Edna/female-impersonator about her with her big frame, long face and gravelly voice. Which heightens the sense of surprise, if that's physically all you know of her, when you read the sexed-up passages from her memoir. Which isn't being critical, I quite like these women who dare to do whatever they feel like doing as long as no one gets hurts, and I especially like it those who chose the path in yesteryears when it was even more taboo.

Oh yeah, and Troigros - but if you want to know just how gros, you'll have to read her memoir!

LOL, Carl. It's not what you meant, I realize, but all the same I'm not sure he's man enough.
