New kitchen gadget

by Matilda L » Sun Aug 01, 2010 3:37 am

The Francophile has bought a new kitchen gadget. He's fond of gadgets and appliances.

This is a contraption called a Flavour Wave Turbo Oven. He saw it advertised on late night TV ... I think this was some time early in the World Cup soccer tournament, when he became largely nocturnal through watching the matches. I have to say I have always been unreasonably sceptical of anything advertised on late night TV, and freely admit this is a prejudice based on snobbery.

Anyhow, this thing arrived a few days ago in a big square carton. It is made of heat resistant glass, like a very big casserole dish, but with a heating and fan unit built into the lid. It claims to cook things in less than half the time it takes in a normal oven.

He cooked a rack of lamb in it yesterday, and I was favourably impressed. It took 35 minutes. I would have liked it a bit more well-done, but that wasn't the oven's fault. It seemed to work fine. Right now, he is in the kitchen preparing to cook a roast chicken with rosemary potatoes.

Maybe I'll have to eat my words about late night TV marketing. And no, we didn't get any steak knives.

Matilda, would you normally cook a rack of lamb in 70 minutes, though? Mine would be out of the oven in under 30. Yours went 35 in this gadget and for you, needed even more time. Tell me what I'm not seeing, because I can't see where the Franc saved any real time.

That said, if he sends away for one of these: RUN!

The gadget came out for the third night running tonight - a melange of roasted veges this time.

1. What I've observed so far is, it doesn't seem to really cut down on cooking time, not so much you'd write home about it.
2. It has cooked three fairly straightforward things competently; I don't know how much creativity it would allow the cook.
3. So far, it has meant that for three days running the Francophile has been happy to cook dinner and I've been able to dodge the kitchen. That has to be a plus, just now, because I'm going through a fairly busy phase.

I wonder how long it will take for the novelty to wear off? ;)
