Just when you thought 'convenience food' couldn't sink any lower comes this. Appalling, but unfortunately not surprising.

Re. the 'What Next?'... surely Sandra Lee can come up with some spectacularly creative use for this that'll have our stomachs shuddering.

Wonder how she will match her decor to canwiches?

There's the cheeseburger in a can made by a Swiss company, though my impression is that it's intended for folks taking long hikes in the wilderness. As for convenience food, in Japan where vending machines are everywhere, you can get hot ramen in a can.

Robin-
I never was issued one of "your" P-38s. Had many of these P-38s however, and if I look around hard enough I probably still have a few laying around.

I don't think either one of us is quite old enough to have been issued one of "my" P-38s, but isn't it a beautiful machine? I guess the can-opener has a certain industrial beauty, too, insofar as form follows function ...

My god, Twinkies will be next! Wait, they don't need to be canned to last forever!

Well, the long-lost-and-lamented KFAT radio station out of Gilroy, CA used to have a "commercial" they would play for "Man in a Can". It was an artificial insemination product.

I reckon the container would cost more than the contents. Don't fancy eating a second rate sandwich in any case, especially if it comes out of a can.

If you want to talk "almost unbelieveable" (well, maybe not so unbelievable in this day and age), there's the story about how development of this wonder food was funded:

Is it any worse than the old Army staple, SOS?

In my USAF days, SOS was offered as an option in the dining hall (flyboy talk for "mess hall" :D ). Old master sergeants with roots stretching back to Korea or even WWII seemed to like it.

In my Air Force days they made SOS with hamburger meat! We still like real SOS made with dried beef and a rich bechamel sauce.

I still have my original P-38 from Vietnam on my keychain.

Oh, and canned bred is certainly nothing new - came in every case of C-rations. You need tht P-38 to get at it.
