He puts WHAT in the ice cream??!!!

by Mike Filigenzi » Mon Jul 05, 2010 12:01 pm

Interesting article on a guy in San Francisco making ice cream that's non-traditional, to say the least. Some this reminds me of the whole molecular gastronomy thing - challenging, creative, brilliant in a way, but not something you want more than one experience with. Do you really need more than a taste of foie gras ice cream? OTOH, hibiscus beet might be pretty good, and the "secret breakfast" sounds like it's worth a try.

All I can say is that if anyone in Israel were to offer up an ice cream called "Jesus Juice" it would surely start a crusade, a new Intifada, a full-blown regional war or even worse, competition that would be selling "Moses Poses" or "Mohammed's Whasis"

Relating to another thread - achla ice cream!

Am I allowed to yawn? I mean, I was eating celery ice cream a decade ago and spargel ice cream a decade before that. The olive oil ice cream trend has come and gone.

I am disappointed that neither of the men manning the vehicle is named Al, even if only as a stage name. :(

Such a brilliant concept ... but soft-serve? :P It's like serving Bud Lite in a golden goblet.

We went some time ago to Michel Bra's 3 star place in Laguiole. My SIL decided to have the "sorbets" as a dessert. All sort of interestimg things like red pepper, and herbs, and so on. 6 dfferent sorbets in pretty tall thin cones, served upside down on a frozen slate.

What a pity none of them actually tasted nice. In a desperate attempt to be original, he forgotten the essential element of palatabilty. Now at the Fat Duck, the bacon and egg ice cream was delicious, and at the French Laundry the boring old coffee ice cream was simply divine. The best coffee ice cream I've ever eaten and a total revelation.

My favorite and most unusual one would have to be rose petal ice cream! Yes, that's crystal rose petals IN ice cream. :)

The hopeless romantic in me wishes I had thought of it! :)

Definitely the most inventive yet sweet flavor (figuratively and symbolically) I've ever seen for ice cream...

We went to the Gilroy garlic festival here in CA a few years ago. We had the opportunity to sample garlic ice cream. All I can say is BLEH, and I love garlic. :(

Things can get pretty bizarre with food at times...and with ice cream, maybe even more so.

I never would've thought of adding salt to ice cream----I don't mean to the hand churning of ice cream, but to ice cream for eating. Never would've thought of adding salt to caramel to put in ice cream. Until I had it done that way.

Never in a million years would I have thought of making ice cream with lavender or rosemary in it. Until I had it done that way.

There was a time when if you told me you wanted to serve me a dessert of vanilla bean ice cream, strawberries on the side, and then poured vinegar over the ice cream to make it perfect....I would have thought you were crazy. Until I had it done that way. Of course, the "vinegar" was balsamico, about 25 years old and thick as treacle, but, hey...

So, I'm fairly open minded when it comes to weird things with ice cream...that don't turn out to be so weird after all.

I still don't want foie gras ice cream however.

Yeah, but my partner Lehman Brothers left me short of capitol. I just know I would have made a killing. :(

So am I, it's never the "idea" that puts me off, it's the taste, I'm afraid. Like Gilroy's famous Garlic ice cream, for example. Actually when we went through the town we could understand why they felt the need to do something to put themselves on the map!!!
