Look at this Elkay sink

A friend of mine has chosen this sink for his new kitchen, and to be honest I can't figure it out. It's almost one big sink except for a short 3 1/2 inch divider. Each side has a drain, and both sides are the same depth (8 3/4"). The only difference is that one side is slightly more than half the total sink area.

What are the advantages of a sink like this? I'm not seeing it....

Weird. The cut sheet for it says; well, here.

4” to 511⁄16” Aqua Divide for a fully
functional kitchen sink

• Separates the sink into three
work zones – traditional double
bowl for washing and rinsing,
plus the area above the partition
to soak and wash oversized
cookie sheets

• Clearance between the Aqua Divide
partition and the faucet is maximized
allowing oversized pots to be filled
conveniently and easily

• The lower height of the Aqua Divide
allows pan handles to extend over it
for easier cleaning and allows you to
easily move heavy pots and pans
from one compartment to the other

Weird in that you only get, what, maybe 4" max to use as a double bowl. That's not enough for me.

I guess the advantage is to give you extra room to soak gigantic pots. But I agree that the teeny little divider means that for all your other dishes, the dish water would slop into the rinse water.

IMO extra-deep sinks are better for the big pots, since they let you keep the wash/rinse sides firmly separate.

But then again I guess if you use a dishwasher for everything, you'd only need your sink to soak your big pots and wash the odd dish, so this would be fine. I was thinking about it from the perspective of one who does not possess a dishwasher - or rather, one who IS the dishwasher. Sigh.

Aqua divide, eh?

You know what, I get the idea of the advantage for big pans, but how often, really, does one wash a big pan where one daily has the need to wash wine glasses, skillets and other stuff for various reasons? I *always* have something air-drying on the drainboard. In fact, so much so that it has turned out--though we never even imagined this possibility--that we put a drainboard in the big sink (I bought a 39" Franke that has one 15" square, shallower sink and one 23 x 18" wide, deeper sink) and use it as our drainboard. Because of it's depth dishes can be in there drying but virtually invisible, and the rack can easily be lifted out of the way when big tasks need it. And the smaller sink is perfect for 98% of the hand washing we do and we don't have to drain the bay to fill it. Not how we planned it but we couldn't be happier.

For someone who does truly want and need a single sink that large, I'd think the 'aqua divide' would just be in the way. Can't do a lot with less than 4" of water.
