Been Out of the Country Too Long

by John F » Sat Jun 12, 2010 3:43 pm

so...I'm back in the US for a few days...and I flip on the Food Channel. There is this brunette on, perky, husky voiced...hair pulled to the side in a little French ponytail look.....is this what's become of Rachel Ray? She looks a little less dowdy than she used to....is it her??

Turns out it was Claire Robinson who was making a grits, sausage and baked egg thing. Only noteworthy part of the show is she appeared to have an orgasm while eating her own food.

We can't get this stuff in India......not sure if that puts us ahead or behind the US.

John, your post cracked me up. I had to Google Claire Robinson. She looks familiar but I've never seen her show. I've pretty much stopped watching the Food Network, but do DVR "The Next TV Food Network Star," which I find amusing in a Top-Chef rip-off kind of a way.
Hello. My name is Carrie, and I...I....still like oaked Chardonnay. (Please don't judge.)

You're better off in India with Khana Khazana!

Makes me glad I don't have a television that is capable of doing anything other than playing back DVDs--and haven't for the last 10 years.

Salil,
What does Khana Khazana mean? As Google's 5th hit will tell you, a popular Indian restaurant proximate to Purdue bears that name, but I had always assumed that the name was somehow derived from the Khanate era. Now, I'm less sure of that assumption.

Khana = food, Khazana = treasure. It's the name of a very popular Indian cooking show hosted by Sanjeev Kapoor that's been around for quite a long time now.

I've never even heard of Claire Robinson, John. But your comments are interesting: I thought only Nigella Lawson was allowed to have orgasms on the air. :)

She has a show called 5 ingredient cooking

Check her out - then you will fully understand my post

I have been watching nigella some in India on discovery channel.....have to admit there is something unusually sexy about her

Hmm - I've had awfully good food, but none that has affected me in that manner. But of course many of the food stars indulge in soft porn with excessive decolletage, simpering looks, bending over the food suggestively. Or so I hear, any way......I am always concentrating on the food itself, of course.

This reminds me. Someone mentioned awhile back that the Food Channel was launching a sister channel that would cater to the more serious cook. A show slated to air there was Canadian chef Laura Calder's. I've not heard any more about that and I don't watch the regular FN anymore, however I did sit through the first two episodes of The Next Food Network Star yesterday morning and one would think they'd be advertising there if anywhere, but no, none observed.

It's the Cooking Channel, advertised heavily on HGTV which, as you know, has been my new favorite channel since we switched to ComCast. I note that Graham Kerr is also featured and he currently resides in ....Washington State? Did we know this?

BTW, Scot & I went to Five Guys for burgers last night - not too bad. Fries are definitely different from In 'n Out and a regular size order is enough for 3 people.

Very much agree regarding Nigella. She doesn't seem to be on around here anymore, though (?)

What do you think so far? I think the right two people have been let go so far, but with the talent as bad as it is, they should be letting go no fewer than two at a time!

I'm waiting for the Clown Channel. But not initiated by the FN. All their personalities would immediately jump ship and head over there.

I just wonder how they can scour the country for talent and come up with the bunch of ridiculous amateurs they do every time. I mean, they must do a fair bunch of screen tests, demos and interviews, and yet they end up with that totally untalented Fong girl (that she had to slice her "pulled pork" wasn't the only problem with that dish) who goes into shock when told that "I just want to make the food that people like" isn't a culinary point of view and the Indian girl who's afraid of her own shadow. These were the best? And how about that chick from Dallas who talks to herself out loud all the time? I was sorry the gay farmer got bounced before we got a chance to know him better, I thought he'd be a kick. I guess the relative unsuccess of past winners tells the real story about what being the best among any given group of contestants selected for this show really means.

Have you seen this channel? Does Comcast carry it? If they do I can't figure out where it's buried.

Yes, we knew that Graham Kerr lives here. Don't know specifically where except that it's close by, possibly Camano Island--his businesses are all Arlington/Burlington addresses.

Agree. It's pretty unbelievable to me. Where are all the people out there with television experience--former show hosts, field reporters, etc. who know food??? Fong really got on my last nerve--what an airhead. Suzy was spot on regarding her point of view. She was clueless. Yes, the Zithra, or whatever her name is, is a total spaz. I'd be a nervous wreck after one of her shows. I really think the darling Italian girl has potential. Beyond her, I don't see anyone with much hope, except maybe the Healthy Guy. No one seems to have the total package. The judges seem to like Aria but she makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

Dzintra. 'Spaz' is a good word for her. I'd take her any day over the last robotic barbie doll they got from Dallas, mind you, but she can't talk and scramble eggs at the same time and you'd think she'd have been culled for that during the selection process. Sure seems to be a major disconnect between what they look for and what they actually need (competence).

I thought that was an emotion only reserved for Paula Deen -- then only while eating a peanut butter and mayonnnaise mousse !
