Chocolate chip /cherry bars recipe needed

by Jim Grow » Wed Jun 09, 2010 3:01 pm

My wife and I just picked a lot of sweet cherries and she cannot find a recipe off a label of Oregon sweet canned cherries that detailed how to make chocolate chip/cherry bars. Anyone out there no of such a recipe?

Oh my, when I was a teenager I used to make chocolate cherry bars. Rich, dense, moist and wonderful, or so I thought at the time--I'm fairly sure one mixed a can of cherry pie filling with a box of chocolate cake mix (as I said, a lifetime ago) and added nothing more than eggs and oil. Probably not what you're looking for and it's not something I'd reccomend now, but surely there has to be recipes all over the internet for a fresher version of what I remember--it's too good a combination for that not to be so. I'll look around.

Jim, I completely flamed out in finding a recipe for chocolate cherry bars that used canned cherries (not even the Oregon brand canned fruit website had such a thing) vs. cherry pie filling (found hundreds of those similar to what I remember making myself years ago). You can conclude that the deal is that the viscosity of the filling vs. fruit and liquid is key to weighing the batter down such that you end up with bars, not cake. However, I did find a recipe for chocolate chip cherry bars: were I your wife, I'd turn my canned cherries into a pie filling and then proceed with that mixture to this recipe:
