Persian cucumbers

by Susan B » Fri Jun 04, 2010 3:38 pm

Jenise mentioned these in her salad post. I have not heard of them before. My husband who did happen to live in Iran loves cucumbers like this. Most of the regular ones we grow don't even make it into the house. My question is are the Persian cucumbers a different variety or just picked early? If they are different has anyone grown them? I have not seen plants so labled. Are there seeds?

If you Google Persian Cucumbers, you will be referenced to many seed sources

Susan, I've never been sure about it--whether persian cukes are a different variety or an "english cucumber" just picked early. But I've always known them by this name both here and in the Asian stores I shopped at in Southern California, and they're usually the baby or "mini" size you can buy in packages of 8 or 10 at Costco but sometimes larger and similar in size to a small domestic cucumber. Never long like the English ones, so it's probably the case that they're a different variety altogether. What I want someone up here to start growing is Armenian cucumbers--they are the sweetest and crispest cucumber I've ever eaten. Or at least, the ones we used to buy when we lived in Saudi Arabia were.

My wife was not aware of Persian cucumbers either but she did find them in Trader Joes yesterday. Haven't tried them yet.
