'tis spring and life begins anew

Finally some warm weather...

We are planting most everything from seeds this year. A bit late getting
started on some of them so it will be a summer long project.

Anyway we are looking forward to some new types of tomatoes this year.
We are growing...

Neves Azorean Red
Amish Gold-Tomato
Brandywine, Sudduth's Strain
Bradley
Andrew Rahart’s Jumbo Red
Beefsteak-Heirloom Tomato

If you live in the city and have to grow plants in containers it is a wonderful process
to watch the growth from the initial small fragile slivers of green to a mighty stalk
bearing an abundance (hopefully) of delicious tomatoes.

Generally we like to simply slice these and taste them individually without any
additives. However, one of my childhood holdover dishes is to put them
between two slices of bread with some mayo... sometimes adding some shredded
iceberg lettuce and crisp bacon.

Any particular ways in which you like to use really good tomatoes during the
summer months.

Tim, tomatoes are my favorite food in the whole world. Don't know why they appeal so, but it's been true since I was a tiny kid. They're my chocolate, my nectar, my lust object.

In addition to eating many right off the vine, I make bunch of different soups, salads and tomato-based sauces--the dish buccatini alla amatriciana made with fresh tomatoes is a thing of incredible joy. This morning I served my husband a halved tomato broiled with a topping of herbs and panko crumbs along with two eggs over easy. I had two raw tomatoes for lunch, and tonight tomatoes are featured heavily in a savory bread pudding I've made out of leftover sourdough bread that will have all the flavors of pizza.

Jenise, where are youfinding good tomatoes in May? Mine are only the size of my thumb....all nine of them so far. The only tomatoes I can find that are decent are the Campari found at Costco and Safeway, but they are on the small size.

Karen, I bought some fabulously sweet Mexican romas last week. Nothing of mine is ready yet, heck I have the starts and they're not even in the ground, shame on me.

Jenise... I agree with the herbed tomato thought process.

I have a provenical tomato recipe that goes quite nicely with almost anything you are making for dinner. A very nice light summer dish.
