Under-the-radar supper clubs

by Jenise » Sun May 16, 2010 12:13 pm

Jeff Grossman mentioned yesterday that he and hubby were going to an "under the radar supper club". It's a phenomena that has gotten a lot of press lately--restaurants with unlisted phone numbers. Secret, invitation only supper clubs that often move from location to location--no licenses, no permits, no address. Anyone ever been to such a thing? And Jeff, how about a report?

I've read of them, never been to one, nor would I go to one. I dislike raids...a lot!

I've never been to one either but I would jump at the opportunity if the vibes I heard were positive. If the food police show up I would think they would only be interested in the people running the dining experience. Don't be so conservative, might be a lot of fun. :)

This made me think of an old Alfred Hitchcock TV show, where a new member would be admitted to a supper club and be fed wonderful meals to fatten him up. He would then be killed and cooked to perfection for the regular members of the club.

Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

I said nothing about being conservative...being smart is more my style. I know how to stay out of trouble. When I worked with law enforcement, they had standard advise for all of us. "Cover your ass". Prior to that, my mother always taught me to never follow the herds, but to use my head and gut feelings to guide me. I'm not against excitement or having fun, but I believe in staying within the law, as much as possible.

Herds of people? I thought this was going to be a unique venue for a memorable dinner. I have mixed emotions unless there is real danger involved.

Speaking of furtive behavior, what's the root word here, is there a 'furt'?

Latin root: furtivus, derived from furtum (theft). This makes sense in light of the meaning of furtive as stolen.
