Now that $100 burgers are on the map, we probably should have been expecting this:

But then again, who could resist a joint named "Cafe Grumpy"?

well, i was ready to join the chorus of boo's. however. i mean - wouldn't i pay $12 for a really good glass of wine? should good alcohol cost that much more than good cafeine? i mean, a lot of people think we are crazy for spending what most of us do on mere wine. so, who am i to say......etc.

IIRC, Cafe Grumpy has built a reputation of delivering the ultimate in high quality (or maybe just high fashion) coffee. They were among the first to offer coffee made with the Clover which only runs about $10,925 more than a good French press.

I agree with David to some degree, though. From the outside looking in, major coffee geeks probably aren't any weirder than major wine geeks.

In Boston since this past weekend, and it hasn't ended yet, people would happily pay $25 for any ole cup of Java. Since the water main broke, there has been pandemoium all over the area. In Rochester, NH this morning there was no bottled water to be found. Tried to get distilled (!) water for true love's c-pap this morning to no avail. Houston, we have a problem!

Hope those Ethiopians who hand-picked those beans got some of that $12.00.

To be fair, I think we have to note that the first post cited an Arrianna Huffington blog.

First she's conservative then she's not.

Not a lot of credibility here, IMHO.

While $12 is a bit much and I know I'm supposed to laugh at this, I am one of those who finds such an enormous gap between coffee I truly love (perfectly roasted full espresso) and coffee that I don't like (drip/diluted) that I truly might be willing to pay such crazy prices per cup if I could always guarantee it would be the greatest cup of coffee(espresso) on earth! :D Of course, it would end up only being a 2-3 times a week "treat" rather than an everyday beverage at that point. LOL

The thing is, I can still get "quite delicious" espressos/iced coffees for just a few dollars rather than $12. So would the upgrade from already "quite delicious" to the "greatest cup of coffee on earth" be worth the extra $9? Probably not. Maybe once in awhile though! :)

Generally the retail cost of a cup of coffee is based on almost everything but the coffee itself. However, true top quality beans are expensive and rare. Checking the recent auction prices for cup of excellence winners http://www.cupofexcellence.org/CountryPrograms/AuctionResults/tabid/194/Default.aspx, one could easily see how a coffee shop could price a cup of coffee from these coffees at $12 per cup.
