Things are getting going at the markets!

by Mike Filigenzi » Mon May 03, 2010 10:31 am

The farmers' markets around here are starting to hit their spring stride. Yesterday brought spring onions, green garlic, garlic stems, more asparagus, local strawberries, and the first cherries of the year. That meant a lovely green garlic soup and strawberry/blueberry tart as parts of last night's supper.

Very much looking forward to the next month at the market!

Sounds like a jackpot to me!

Yesterday a friend brought over some salad greens she bought at our local market on Saturday, and they were sensational. The mix included some ferny red things I've never seen before. Also, a mix of colored radishes. The white and red were fine, but the purple were especially sweet. I agree, great time of year!

Saturday I picked up strawberries, rhubarb, fava beans, spring onions, three yarrow plants (did you know when you cut yourself, you can pick the yarrow leaves, crush them a bit and put them on your cut? It stops the bleeding.) a Goliath tomato plant, English Peas, asparagus, olive oil, and roasted almonds.

extremely early Spring this year. the first asparagus was a full 2 weeks ahead of the previous early date. we still need to avoid frosts of course. in the absence of frost damage this will be one of the earliest budding of the vines here in a long time and could be the beginning of a very good year - esp for reds.

Yes, very early here also. I've been harvetsing asparagus and arugula now for 3 weeks and harvested my first batrch of spinach and lettuces last night.
Planted a new mix from Nichols this year- some very interesting frilly green and purple things I've never seen before. Heavier texture than lettuces but very tasty. Will have to go back to the catalog for identifying them.
I may regret it but planted out the basil yeaterday. We've been known for frost in June....I have a lot of blankets

Sounds wonderful! Late Autumn heading into Winter here, and our markets were full of new season apples, limes and oddly enough leeks last week.
