COOL TOOL

by Jo Ann Henderson » Sat May 01, 2010 9:38 am

I've been compiling a list of cooking related weblinks for an upcoming study at work. I ran across this cool tool from Fruit From Washington.com. This tool will automatically quadruple a recipe or cut it into 4ths when you enter the desired result and the original qty and ingredients. It then produces a print-ready copy of the altered recipe with the original qty of ingredients in parentheses, if you so desire. The best one I've run across so far. Check it out!

Jo Ann, Hi....

A convenient tool but one that must be taken with the proviso that simply cutting a recipe into mathematical proportions does not always work well. Think for example of making a pasta dish in which one can quarter the amount of pasta and herbs used but in which the sauce should only be halved. Or of a dish that relies on maitre d'hotel butter in which although the quantity of meat can be halved the quantities of both pepper and the sauce should remain nearly constant.

You are correct, of course, Daniel. But, as with all recipes, this is merely a template that provides us with a shorthand for doing the hard work. A cook already understands and can intuit the rest. Those who are just learning will figure it out when they double the amount of cinnamon or cayenne and don't end up with the expected outcome. OUCH!

Thanks for the link...it is indeed a cool tool and like you said, to be used as a template. Beginning cooks will soon learn from their mistakes, as we all did.

This is totally off-topic, Jo Ann, but reading the subject title of this post this morning made me think "It's a good thing she didn't title it, What's Your Favorite Cool Tool? Mike Filigenzi, for one, would not have given you a straight answer. :)

I was aware of the pitfalls when I posted the title, Jenise. Believe, I am always fully prepared for the kook-squad! :D

Then I'll confess as to how I learned my lesson (and it can be argued that I've not learned it yet): thinking in terms of complete nutrition, I started a post titled, "What do you not eat enough of?" Stuart got to it first.

Yeah, there were some thoughts along those lines. I managed to keep them to myself, though. :D

I agree this is one cool tool. I added it to my favorites on my browser. It is especially valuable to print the changes so that the wine consumed during the cooking doesn't make one forget and not double or halve an ingredient. Thanks for posting it.
