Anyone speak French?

by Karen/NoCA » Tue Apr 27, 2010 2:29 pm

We have a local food critic who calls herself, "femme de joie". I have heard the "joie" pronounced, "joey" and "zwah". So what is the correct pronunciation? I'm guessing "joie" means JOY?

An interesting choice of self-identification. The term fille de joie originated during the French Revolution and then, as now, refers to a prostitute. The origin of the term femme de joie was somewhat later, during Victorian days and implied a woman who had "difficulty in remaining fidelity to a single man". As used largely in France today, the femme de joie is the equivalent of the American slang term "cougar".

Daniel, perhaps the conclusion we should reach, then, is that Karen's food critic doesn't actually speak French either!
