Jenise, et al:

In the recent thread on German cuisine losing it's way in this country, there was a lot of back and forth.

Check out Gruner (http://www.grunerpdx.com) restaurant in Portland. It's the newest and hottest place on the scene right now, and it's packing them in every night.

The whole schtick is elevated 'pan-Germanic' food---from Alsacienne tart flambe to house-made wurst und sauerkraut (albeit some kick ass sauerkraut, choucroute style), boiled potatoes, spaetzle, little dumplings like gnocchi but way lighter, rabbit sausage, venison, authentic Austrian Kavalierspitz (!), and on and on.

Great wine list too. Also an excellent bar.

It's really got the Germanic thing going on, and I'm actually pretty surprised that it is booming as much as it is. But it most certainly is.

Thanks for the heads up, Hoke. Sounds highly entertaining--will put this on the list for next time I'm in Portland.

I have got to get to Portland. Laura and I want to see Crater Lake some time, so an overall longer trip to Oregon will be necessary.

Always welcome here, David. Might even be able to find a cheap bottle of wine to drink.
