RCP: Cure for the common cold

by Mike Filigenzi » Tue Apr 20, 2010 12:32 am

When my wife is sniffly, sneezy, and generally under the weather, this is what she requests as an after-dinner-before-bed beverage:

1 oz. Bacardi white rum
1/2 oz. Myers's dark rum
1/2 oz. Lemon Hart Demerara rum
1 tsp. dark brown sugar
pinch each of ground cinnamon, clove, allspice
1 pat butter (a little short of 1 tbsp.)
1 cup water, heated and just off the boil
fresh nutmeg
1 cinnamon stick

Combine the first 6 ingredients in a good-sized coffee mug. Fill with the hot water and grate a little fresh nutmeg over the top. Stir with the cinnamon stick and serve.

Hot Buttered Rum is an ancient cure for the common cold, and it works!

Confession: I've never had a hot buttered rum. What does the butter bring to the party? I would think you'd end up with this grease slick on top (not that I don't love melted butter).

You do indeed end up with a buttery slick at the top of the drink. I've only had a sip or two myself, but the butter does taste good in there.

Absolutely nothing will cure the common cold but I'm all for hot rum toddies, Cognac, Armagnac or other such tiddles. Such beverages will not cure the cold but they will at least make you enjoy your suffering.

Hmmm... I reckon that might just about cure everything, Mike. :)
