Muddy Tasting Lobster

by Maria Samms » Sun Apr 18, 2010 1:01 pm

On Friday, I bought 5 lobsters for dinner at the Fish Market in our local grocery store. They were alive in the tank, and I have bought some there several times before. This time though, they all had a very muddy, metallic flavor, like some catfish. I was wondering why this would be the case. In all my years, I never tasted lobster like this and I was incredibly disappointed.

I always add fresh lemon, both the squeezed juice and the two halves to the water when I am either boiling or thawing seafood. I find that the lemon absorbs a lot of the "foreign" tastes that can accompanies the seafood.

Really strange, Maria, I've never encountered that before. Not with lobster, anyway. The one time I bought crawfish (in California) though, 'mud' was the first word that came to mine. Inedible. Would think it has to do with the conditions the lobster was raised in--do you know where they were from?

Thanks guys.

Jenise - This is the first time this happened to me as well. That's why it was so disappointing...I thought the one thing I could count on was that live lobster would taste fresh and sweet. I assumed they are from Maine (since they are called Live Maine Lobsters), but you never know. I will ask them next time and see if they know where they get them.
