I thought he was kidding, but then realized that might not be the case. I googled a bit and found that the meal actuallly exists. Yaaargh....

The only good news is that those white and yellow things on top are not worms. They are said to be shredded cheese.

Ah yes, cheese. Or, what passes for cheese in America these days: tasteless strands cut in some giant factory and then dusted with flour to keep them from sticking together in the package.

I thought they were gummy worms. Oh, they are. Made from milk and chemicals.

I do love (Kentucky) Fried chicken definitely!

And Mashed Potatoes, coleslaw perhaps... definitely my kind of comfort/delicious food.

But chicken "stuff" in a bowl? I can't say it's my cup of tea exactly (or is that cup of chicken...) :)

Jeff, there you are! You've been away or at least eerily quiet for awhile, and we missed you!

And yet oriental noodle meals-in-a-bowl apparently are OK. I wonder how much of the disparagement is due to the dish coming from a big fast food company such as KFC?

Thank you Jenise - I had no idea I was even missed, but it's always nice to hear!

I've actually been back a little while, over in the Friends & Fun and Wine forum, just catching up on a few that I missed...

But thanks for the welcome! If anything I figured the forum might be re-joicing - "Thank goodness he finally left! No more incoherent stream-of-thought 100,000 word posts and no more posts about straws, ice, lemons, cereal or whatever else seems to fascinate his simple little mind..."

There's no intrinsic reason why the container should dictate quality one way or another, and meals-in-a-bowl have a long and storied history in almost every culture. The point here is more about the basic ingredients, I think, than the source of the meal. For instance, I've had a great meal-in-a-bowl at an MLB baseball game: the wonderful "Cha Cha" bowl at Orland's Caribbean BBQ above the centerfield bleachers of PacBell...errr... SBC...err...AT&T Park. :D

I love Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese noodle bowls. I draw the line at bread bowls with anything in them. There just seems something chronically pathological and demonstrative of a typical American addictive behavior disorder about eating your food -- then consuming the container it came in! This KFC bowl just looks like the leftovers from a half consumed meal that's all tossed into a single container before the whole thing gets tossed.

They would eat off it, then give the bread/plate to the poor?! I knew there was something disgusting about it!

Bob, I personally have no issue with meals in a bowl or parfaited foods. What makes the KFC meal so gross is the mashup of carbs and fried food with the added insult of the cheese garnish. All calorie, no nutrition.

Jenise, did my reply to Paul somehow seem to you to be that I was in favor of this mish-mash? I have not ever, nor will I ever order and consume this dish, that IMO resembles the end result of eating, more than the act of earing itself.

Just tonight I made a dish that could be compared as a Meal in a Bowl. whereby I did braised beef short ribs that included onions, celery, garlic and rice. The braising liquid included beef broth, a pinch of thyme, a ts of worcester and baking at 350-400 for 1.5 hours Good stuff too.

I dunno. I've never had schnitzel on mashed potatoes with gravy and cheese on top. I love schnitzel (veal, chicken, pork) but we typically serve with lighter stuff.
Ditto the Asian rice/noodle bowls - all of the ones I've ever had had a substantial amount of vegetables in the mix (and not fried breaded meat).

I wasn't talking presentation, my man. I was talking ingredients. I've often had schnitzel with mashed potatoes. Sometimes with gravy. Should a cheese course be included in the meal - well there you have it, they will all meet in your stomach and not give a shit about how they were presented. Nutritious, too.
