I think seltzer is just water and carbon dioxide, club soda may have some additional ingredients - like bicarbonates or phosphates.

What Chef said. Seltzer historically was produced by bubbling gaseous carbon dioxide through water to get fizzy water. Club soda (as implied by the name) was created by acidifying a solution of sodium bicarbonate (bicarbonate of soda) to get Seltzer water with salt in it.

Yes, club soda is kinda like the "son" of seltzer water and may have additional stuff added so they can jack up the price!
During the depression, it was referred to as "two cents plain", and costs substantially more now.

A drink of scotch and soda used to cost a nickel. The saying was that 3 cents was the scotch and 2 cents was the soda. So, if you wanted just a shot of whiskey you would ask, "GIve me the 3 cents plain".

Asking for "the 2 cents plain" is a bit of a joke on a joke.

I actually possess three siphon bottles, two of mesh-encased glass and one metal. I make my own seltzer.

I was eleven when I first ran across the word "gasogene" in The Canon. Had to know what it was. And then had to have one. :)
