Whale: it's what's NOT for dinner

Hump, a Los Angeles sushi restaurant, closes after being fined $200K for serving an endangered species:

Screw the fine. Give 'em the time and make them make restitution for the per diem cost of their incarceration.

I'll second that and I' d like the name of the owners as I feel certain they will pop up again somewhere.

When I lived in Japan, I saw canned whale meat, and whale listed on the menu of sushi bars. But according to my Japanese friends, while older folks ate more whale meat, especially during the lean post-war years, the younger generation doesn't care for it and many share the view that whales should be protected.

Paul, I read this before and didn't get it. But just now I got it, and probably woke up my poor husband I laughed so loud.

Not surprising but good to hear nonetheless. I actually tasted whale meat once in Alaska; would never be a fan.

I tried kujira when I was in Tokyo. It's OK but not worth killing whales to get. :)

Animal 'rights' seems to boil down to how close to humans the animals are perceived as being. It can be in terms of intelligence, as in the case of the whales, or it can be whether or not most people think they are 'cute' - teddy bears etc. Wart hogs don't get organizations aimed at imrpoving their lives!

I suspect that some whales are more intelligent than some humans I've had to deal with, so on that ground alone, I wouldn't want to see trade in whales continue.

Jenise, have to actually get to work, much fun as this exchange has been (well, at least for us, anyway). Last volley coming by email.

Well, what I meant is that it tasted something on the order of carpaccio with a bit of fishy silkiness. Nice but hardly worth hunting an endangered creature for.

As to animal rights... pffft. I eat mammals all the time (pig, cow).

Work. That's right, you're a lawyer. Probably had a breach of contract to deal with, eh?
