Best Smells

by Bill Spohn » Sat Mar 13, 2010 11:22 am

Lots of food smells great while it is cooking, but a few foodstuffs go beyond the routine and will beckon to me from a long distance.

You may have different smells that hit your buttons, but mine would be coffee, bacon cooking, and fresh bread coming out of the oven.

My wife adds that a frying onion calls out to her as well. What does it for you?

Boiled cabbage.

No, seriously, coffee is one that says "home" to me. Mine automatically brews before I get up, so the smell is always a good incentive.

Probably my favorite cooking smell is "Thanksgiving dinner" in the oven.
Second to that would probably be any braised meat dish.

I'm getting hungry!

Right now the house is filled with smell of the first cooking of a Virginia Ham that we brought back from a recent trip. Will be serving it to a crowd tomorrow night.

Garlic and onions sauteing together in butter (pinch of salt and freshly grated black pepper).

BBQ from any distance, such as driving along and having to stop and get some.
More outside smells include good curry (hard to find) and sometimes the smell of a beloved greasy spoon.
In the house, coffee and bacons are givens, and too many more to list.

Ah, now we're moving from cooking smells to inherent aromas.

But, yeah.

And exactly what recipe do you use for those guys?

Back to the original subject food smells before we start getting descriptions of the scents of sandalwood unguent rubbed on the thigh of a dusky maiden (not that there is anything wrong with that, but it should be in one of Hoke's threads).

You guys covered most of my bases:

#1: fresh brewed coffee AND bacon at the same time
#2: the Beverly Hills Cheese Store

And all these follow in any order:

a roasting prime rib
a panful of sauteeing onions and garlic to which the spices for an Indian curry have just been added
smoking pork ribs
baking cinnamon rolls
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
