Is Spring here yet?

by Karen/NoCA » Sat Feb 27, 2010 2:15 pm

I picked a second harvest of the Swiss Chard. Parsley, chives and other herbs are being picked all the time now. This was this mornings catch. Any signs of spring your way?

Not Spring yet in the middle Ohio Valley. That said, now that the snow is finally out of the garden, I will till a small area tomorrow and plant some spinach. Peas, lettuce, etc. to hopefully follow shortly.
NJ has started some seeds for the flower gardens indoors and they should be emerging in a week or so.
We have lots to do outside as we just completed a terraced hillside in late fall and this is our first Spring in this house....can't wait to get started.
The tractor mower has been serviced and is ready to go.

The corner shop is selling daffodils. I can climb over the snow drifts to buy them. Does that count?

I snowblowed 6 inches out of the driveway yesterday. Now I have to snowblow another 4 inches before I can go out.

Yes, it is spring here in the PNW. I harvested a handful of chives for our baked potatoes on Wednesday, and my tulips are beginning to show their heads.

Aren't those fresh chives just great? Do you have regular chives or garlic chives? I have both, but find I use the regular more often. I really need to find ways to use them both more often. I have one plant of each, but they get so huge.

We have daffodils and naked ladies popping up all over the yard, and should have daffodil blooms in another couple of weeks. It's not raining or snowing at the moment, and we have a week of sunshine forecast for this part of Oklahoma, so I am hopeful of Spring! That being said, I can't count out a late snowfall until early April. :?

I have both. But, I don't use the garlic chives in my cooking. I keep them as ornamentals in a large pot on the deck. The flowers are so beautiful (white ones -- my prior garlic chive had lavender flowers).

My chives are four inches tall and my tarragon is leafing out (this is especially exciting, as I planted this from a clump Susan B gave me a few months ago).

It is also exciting because French Tarragon is hard to find. It has to be propagated and I guess the growers don't like doing it. Gene tilled my tarragon up last year thinking it was a weed and I had a heck of a time finding another plant. An organic grower at the Farmer's Market had it. I warned him this year when it came up! Let me know when you use it, if you think it is as strong a flavor as when you bought it. I tasted mine a few days ago and it was very mild. I'm hoping that as it gets more sun, the flavor will intensify.

Wow, Jenise, after reading this post I ran out to my herb garden to have another look. Your tarragon is leafing? Mine is just beginning to break ground. Got a couple leaves on my thyme. Nothing from my oregano. But, then again, I just had my herb and vegetable patch dug out, added new soil and compost, and replanted. The gardeners always tidy up everything so they more than likely trimmed any new growth back and threw it out. Ugggggghhhhhhhh!!!

Tell me about hard to find. I've been looking for years. Last year I actually found seeds in Seattle, but nothing came up when I planted them. :( I was so thrilled when Susan offered me a clump of hers when she cut it back in the fall. And I think I can expect great flavor: Susan's given me some of hers and it's everything you want French Tarragon to be.

Oh, and speaking of spring, I had my builder make me a new raised bed just for asparagus.

I've read that garlic chives are used in Chinese cooking in place of fresh garlic. They can also be used in cooking of soups, stews and in meat marinades. Chives are high in calcium and some of the B vitamins. So adding them to foods would certainly be a plus. I love the flowers too and add them as a garnish to many dishes. The bees also love them and when mine are in bloom, they are always covered with bees. They don't bother me when I do my harvesting...I guess they sense I am willing to share.
