Stainless steel is out, white is in. Please box up all your dated, uncool appliances and call the junk man.

I doubt SS wil never be out for the person interested primarily in function rather than appearance.

So, I can keep the 1976 harvest gold Kenmore electric stove I got from my mother and painted white. :)

Gee, how did I know that 12 years ago when we remodeled. Oh I know, I love contemporary, we have lots of glass, lots of white and off whites, and I wanted a white kitchen. I added a wood floor, a built in wood buffet and cookbook/tv custom piece to separate two rooms, so Gene would be happy. I still love it. It does show environmental dirt, especially on the interior of the cabinets. Since the outside gets wiped down every two weeks, the inside is not as noticeable until you take everything out to clean, and then you see all the dark build up on the shelves and walls. I think it must be from the gas stove, plus I love burning candles in the winter.

Hey, I've got a whole roomfull. And they've all gotta go. Hey, maybe we should be like Karen. Figure out what's going to be the next big thing after the next big thing, and do THAT. Just promise me it won't be teal.

In our first home (apartment) the appliances were turquoise, and I used pink towels in my kitchen, which had dark brown cabinets. Then we had avocado green appliances, in our first single family home. Second home had brown. This home started out as brown, went to harvest gold, and finally white. I never did have all stainless, but I have a stainless Dacor stove in my kitchen now Actually, the trim is stainless, and the Sub Zero refer matches the cabinets, and has heavy stainless pulls on the refer and freezer doors.
Has anyone got the red appliances or black?

Our range is a dark red. Fridge is stainless but you don't really see it. (And thank goodness for that - we'd HATE to be unfashionable!! )

I like the idea of spray paint.

But with all the fridge magnet decorations these days, who ever sees that color of the appliance?

I had a harvest gold side by side in my laundry room. When we switched refrigerators in the kitchen I gave it away to a wine wholesaler who uses it in their lunch room. The month after we switched our electric bill went down about $25.

Interesting post. I have been scouting around for the latest in counter tops, because I assume granite will take a fashion hit. Soapstone was the next best, I could find. Anyone find something different?

I doubt granite will go out of fashion. It has good properties for a countertop. Isn't soapstone too soft?

Now, colored granite... that's a whole 'nother story.

How about mica? Has good dielectric properties, too.

Julia, you're right about granite and fashion. I love the look of natural rock but I was horrified to find, when shopping in Seattle, some Chinese manufacturers that stock tons in pre-cut lengths for standard sized countertops, and so cheap that every spec house in the land can have granite countertops for about the price of Formica. When that happens--as you say, fashion hit. So I tried hard not to buy granite and was particularly interested in man-made products that looked unabashedly man-made (which excludes Silestone), especially if recycled material was involved. I haunted places like Pental (pentalonline.com is their website, I believe) which have a great range of product of this sort--but in the end they were either too shiny or soft or not stain resistant. I love the look of concrete but it chips too easily. So I ended up with granite after all, but I mixed two in a ratio of about 4:1 with the largesse being a black anticado (a real estate appraiser here last week delighted me by saying he'd never seen it before), which is actually the granite otherwise known as Absolute Black that's been treated with an acid wash to pock it all up then polished. The result is a matte black surface that feels like leather. I love it.

I, too, wanted an non-granite surface in my kitchen with its painted white cabinets and oak floors, but hubby insisted the next buyer wouldn't understand the recycled paper product that started life as chemistry lab counters or the Silestone-types. So we ended up with dark green to black granite with a honed surface. It is not the shiny surface we had in our last house and that is everywhere these days and so it doesn't show the water marks from our harder water here. Further when it needs a good clean I simply use Bon Ami and it goes back to the surface it was when it was installed. A friend worried that I would be wearing away the surface, I figure I won't possibly live that long.

Your counters are beautiful. They look like jade, not granite, and it's perfect for palate of colors. Hubby's right if you sell the house furnished, but he's wrong because I'm never going to let you sell and move away. So there.

I pointed out several decades ago, while I was married, that if anyone ever heard someone refer to me as "hubby" it would probably be a good time to vacate the premises since I would be off to retrieve my Beretta ASAP.
