Happy Fat Tuesday!

by Dave R » Tue Feb 16, 2010 12:38 pm

Is anyone doing anything special? A friend of mine is from New Orleans so she takes today off from work each year and whips up a big Cajun and Creole feast for a bunch of us. It’s always a good time with plenty of great food.

It's Shrove Tuesday, and we are shroving Mexi-burgers on sub rolls, with enchilada sauce, cheese, and shredded lettuce. Will pop a TJ Petite Sirah with it.

Nothing too fancy; jerk chicken (with a marinade that Mark Lipton posted a recipe for on this forum), black bean curry with rice and no wine. I'll make up for it tomorrow with plenty of pie.

Wish I were back home in a second floor apartment overlooking Bourbon Street tonight (Royal would do). Alas, I am in Oregon and will be shroving - in my way.

Hey, Salil! Good to hear that someone's putting that recipe to use. Did you perchance have the opportunity to smoke the bird? It makes a great deal of difference to me.

We had gouda, gorgonzola, crackers, salami, and ravioli snacks with plenty of Carmenere tonight at the wine society meeting. Oh, and we had quesadillas filled with spicy black beans, onions, Mexican chorizo and cheddar cheese before we ran out the door.

Any of that count?

No Fat Tuesday for me, but one of the women at work brought in a deep fryer and made spring rolls to celebrate Chinese New Year.

Hi Mark,
I didn't smoke it - but that is in the plans once the weather warms up. (With all the snow/slush out there and classes cancelled, figured I'd just keep the cooking indoors - plus I don't have the equipment yet.)
That said I've been getting really good mileage on the jerk sauce/marinade recipe - used it with some pork as well, and have been adding it in small quantities to some other stews.
