NEWS: El Bulli to close permanently!

by Jenise » Sat Feb 13, 2010 4:39 pm

Here's a link to a short article about it in the New York Times:

One hates to say "I told you so" but after all, I told you so!!! But let's not forget that the joke will not have been fully played out until he publishes his next book and sells it for the equivalent of US$500 a copy.

That was the original story, Trevor, he was going to take a break, something the NYT article refers to. The update on that is that the restaurant is closing permanently to become a culinary academy.

Not according to today's article in the Spanish ABC in which Ferran Adria denies the NYT article and that he plans to re-open the restaurant in 2014, possibly under a different business structure. Of course plans can change between now and 2014 but he claims the restaurant will continue, at least for now.

I suspect this is a clever tax wheeze.............build up accumulated tax losses, close the business, transfer the tax losses into a new company and re-open the business and use to offset against profits. My knowledge of Spanish corporate tax law is a bit out-of-date but some of their tax breaks would be looked at askance in the UK and US.

Because the UK and the US are such business-hostile environments!

Yes.......... well, banks didn't seem to think that it was such a hostile business environment until 2008..... it may be relatively more hostile in western economies while those economies digest the cost of bailing out certain banks by raising taxes or cutting public spending or both..... maybe this is a subject for an offline discussion next time I'm in the US. Not at El Bulli.

Whatever, as Damon Runyon's characters would have put it, "I'll lay six to one odds" that El Bulli and its very unique cuisine will not see the light of future days. I'd not be surprised if the chef opened a highly traditional, almost a la Escoffier style restaurant.

And there are most likely places where you could make that bet.
