My first

by Alan Wolfe » Sat Jan 30, 2010 1:53 pm

A good friend gave me a cookbook for Christmas. It is "Food with the Famous, by Jane Grigson, probably out of print now, it was first published in 1980. It includes recipes from as early as John Evelyn (1620-1706), an English Rloyalist, to as late as Marcel Proust (1871-1922) and including such notables as Jane Austen and Claude Monet.

I found a recipe for Tarte Tatin that I thought I could manage, and this was the result. I cannot remember ever having seen or tasted a Tarte Tatin before, so I have no idea what it is supposed to look like. Hopefully someone will let me know if I got it wrong.

Looks tarte tatin-ish enough for me.

Also looks good.

Congratulations.

Other than the fact that yours is rectangular vs. the traditional round, I think you nailed it. Pass me a slice, would you? :)

In the second photo, I'd like to know why it didn't slide off the plate?

I think it's shaped more like Alan: square. :)

I'm not a tatin expert but it looks pretty damn good to me!

Alan,

That looks very tasty and thanks for posting the photos. Is that your oven on your left? It looks cool in a retro sort of way.

Dave - Yes, the oven is kind of retro. It's a Rathbone-Sard Acorn gas stove c. 1880-1900 according to the guy who restored it. It was in pretty good shape when I got it for about $250. We used it for 20 years or so, then decided to have it properly restored. Worn bits replaced, new nickel plating, new paint, etc. All the valves, enamel, major parts are original. We're very pleased with it.

Yeah, I always make them round - 10" - and arrange the apple slices in alphabetical order.

Alan, it's beautiful. I would love a piece for breakfast right now with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream.

Wow, Alan
I'm impressed!

Thanks all for the kind compliments and good advice. The recipe recommended a round pan with sides perpendicular, but square with sides perpendicular was what I had so that is what I used. Next time I get out of the "holler" I'll try to find a proper Tatin pan.
