Got my fix tonight.

by Mike Filigenzi » Fri Jan 29, 2010 1:17 am

And I was really jonesing for this. We went to Jamie's, probably the only restaurant we could be considered "regulars" at. We go there because the food is great, the cocktails are strong, and the people are friendly. They have a small menu along with a list of specials that always includes a couple of fresh fish dishes, maybe smoked prime rib, maybe corned beef and cabbage, a couple of salads, etc. I haven't had any of those in years. And that's because when I go there, I can't get away from ordering their club sandwich. It's only two pieces of bread, but it's as thick as most double-deckers. This is because the turkey in it is cut in chunks from whole turkey breasts they roast on site. Then there's the lettuce and tomato and the avocado. But what really puts the finishing touch on it is the house-cured bacon. Thick slices, cooked so they're still just a little chewy, and heavy with smoky porky fatty goodness. Order one of those with the bread toasted, a side of fries, and a couple of vodka-cranberry drinks and all of the cares of the world slip off of you like a thick layer of dirt in a hot bath. If there's a better club sandwich in the world, I want it.

I'm a Club Sandwich lover myself! That or a tasty BLT. Delicious!

Club sandwiches are a mainstay for me during the tomato season, which is far too short.

OMG, that sounds like a good club, Mike. One thing I don't like about a club sandwich is that sort of slimy texture turkey meat that is often used. I'll bet it is amazing with the fresh.

Sounds Amazing Mike! A Turkey Club is my usual order when I go to a NJ diner. They almost always use real roasted sliced turkey breast, not the slimey processed meat stuff. Gotta love the New Jersey Diner!

Just love clubs.

The little sandwich shop nearest to my office does not make a great club but they do roast their own turkey every day. None of it is really up to snuff but I can, at least, jog my memory a bit.

Went out to lunch today. Ordered the Club sandwich. Your fault.

Mike,

Right now there is a guy somewhere with a high maintenance woman and they are eating at a molecular gastronomy place, or something of that ilk, and he is saying to himself, “Damn, I just wish I could be eating a Club Sandwich by myself”.

Great report, Mike.

I'm going to make one right now - substituting chicken breast for turkey. I'm alone for a couple of days and am going to do all sorts of stuff.

Our favorite club sandwiches are the ones we make ourselves. Next time we'll add the avocado!

Please don't post the details. There are nice women on this board that do not want to hear about that kind of activity.

Don't worry Dave. The gas station will interfere with whatever sordid plans chef has cooked up.

From what I have heard, those gas stations sell a lot of stroke magazines.

How is the bionic knee, Mike?

I have little experience with the whole molecular gastronomy thing. But I'll be astonished if any of it can come as close to Nirvana as a great club sandwich.

The knee is doing well, thanks for asking. I have moved on to repairing other body parts.....foot surgery in October, left rotator cuff in December are both pretty well healed now. Next up, less than 2 weeks, is right rotator cuff. I anticipate having a better golf swing by April. Whether that means lower scores remains to be seen.
Cheers!

Especially not his plans for the perp of the gas station heist. 8)
