The Dollar is also known as a Nickel

by Peter May » Sun Jan 24, 2010 2:45 pm

McDonalds have a new advert out in the UK which promotes its Pound Saver Menu, saying s "the pound, also known as a bob

Bob was slang for the old shilling, now worth five pence.

Equivalent of saying a dollar is also known as a nickel!

Backpedalling, they are claiming that a pound is now known as a bob. Bolleaux.

Peter, Hi...

Depending largely on when one was born, I suspect a dollar is probably worth about a nickel these days. In my own case, I do clearly remember when both a cup of coffee and a draught beer cost $0.05. Sic transit gloria mundi!

Mickey D's of course meant to say 'quid', not 'bob'.

I know Gloria Mundi. Bus and subway rides always make her queasy.

The original prices at McDonald's were 15 cents for a hamburger and 10 cents for the small order of fries. That was circa 1962.

When I was in high school in 1971, I worked as a volunteer at our town's recycling center on Saturdays. The local Friendly's sandwich shop donated vouchers worth $2 for lunch at that shop. That would get you a Big Beef hamburger, french fries, and a Fribble milk shake.

Ah, the wonders of compound inflation. On the other hand, a computer with the power of what's in your cell phone would have cost millions of dollars back then, and would have occupied a small building.

Is Gloria Mundi by any chance related to Coati Mundi?

She does have an Aussie cousin called Barry, though he's a bit of a fishy character.
