Adventures in Thermomixing II - "Family Thermochowder"

by Mike Filigenzi » Thu Jan 14, 2010 12:07 am

Tonight I made my first foray into Thermomix cooking. I pulled a recipe for something called "Family Chowder" off of a Thermomix blog and figured I'd give it a shot.

The first step involved cooking bacon, onion, and garlic on the stovetop. (You can reportedly do something akin to sauteeing on the Thermomix but I wouldn't trust it for that and neither did the author of this recipe.) You then throw some roughly chopped celery, carrot, and potato in the TM and whiz it at high speed for a few seconds. Then add the bacon mix. (Curiously, the recipe didn't say anything about draining the bacon fat off. Seemed like a good idea to me.) Throw in hot chicken stock and set the thing to 100 °C, 30 minutes, at a slow mixing speed. Once that was done, I threw in a can of creamed corn. (This seemed awfully Sandra Lee-ish but there's no fresh corn to be had so I went along with it.) That gets mixed for a few seconds and then a cup and a half of milk whisked with a couple of tablespoons of flour gets dribbled in while the thing is stirring at 100 °. Cook for a couple more minutes, adjust seasonings and eat.

So how was it? Very good. A nice hearty soup that tasted as you'd expect from the recipe. Quite quick and convenient for weekday cooking as well. Cleanup was fast and easy.

Current verdict: It works as advertised, for the most part.
