Adventures in Thermomixing

by Mike Filigenzi » Fri Jan 08, 2010 9:55 am

For our first attempt on the Thermomix, we figured we'd pass on the pot au feu and go with homemade Nutella. So we weighed some sugar into the bowl and pulverized it with the blade. Then we weighed in some skinned, roasted hazelnuts and pulverized them. Then in went dark chocolate and used a lower speed on the blade to chop it. After that, we added milk, set the temperature for 50 °C, the timer for 6 minutes, and the stir speed at "3", and let it go. Sure enough, 6 minutes later we were scraping a chocolate-hazelnut spread out of the thing. I will say that homemade Nutella is superior to what you get in the jar. The ability to use really good chocolate is a pretty big improvement. There are also opportunities to add spices, liqueurs, etc. that would be worth pursuing.

The verdict on the the Thermomix? Well, for Nutella production it's definitely convenient. Being able to weigh in each ingredient, to mill, and to gently cook, all in the same container is very handy. It's also only one item to be cleaned. But you could obviously do just as well with a food processor, a scale, and a pan. Not bad for a first try, though.

The real test will be around 1:30 PM west coast time this Sunday. Will this new miracle machine be able to grill a brat while toasting a bun while making sauerkraut while mixing the perfect Old Fashioned? Put it to the test Mike!

Excellent test!

If it can somehow produce a win, they'll REALLY have something!

Y'know, I think you could actually do this. If I can figure it out I will do it just for the name!
