Crushing ice, ice crushers?

by Greg H » Thu Jan 07, 2010 12:57 pm

As a follow up to the ice machine thread I started, I have another question. Based on the helpful suggestions in that thread, I am planning on purchasing a clear ice stand alone machine, and have a call into a Scotsman dealer. At times, I would like to have crushed ice. Do folks have favorite ways, or appliances, to crush ice? A plastic bag, covered by a towel and meat pounder work fine for one glass, but is not ideal for larger quantities. Suggestions?

I have a stand-alone ice crusher by Oster (I think it's Oster). It is not new, is very well constructed and quite heavy-duty. It has a fine and course setting and a large collection bin. It is very loud, however - enough to cause me to crush ice, if necessary, in advance of an event where there will be guests around. I used to have on in the door to the fridge, which worked but, disappointingly, did not crush the ice informally. The fridge has been relegated to the basement, outside the wine cellar and without a water supply for now - that'll teach it a lesson.

I just put ice cubes in a plastic bag and pound the crap out of them with a meat tenderizer.
